I recorded the sounds of the street; some people's voices, some sounds of cars. I am often aware of a dissonance between absolutely peaceful manifestations of life and the realisation that there is a war in our country. Sometimes I catch myself listening out for the sounds of rockets. I thought for a long time about how to illustrate the recording with a photograph. Ultimately I decided to share a photo of tape on my windows. The tape is there to strengthen the glass in the event that it shatters due to a drone or an explosion. War is near. Once I saw it right outside the window.
This is a recording of the sounds of the street at night. It was close to midnight. I like to hear some sounds of nature, and a lot of sounds of nature are absent in the big city. And now we have different sounds; the sounds of rockets, Shaheds [Iranian-manufactured drones] and other things. In my life, sound was always so relaxing, but now it’s stressful for me because I don’t hear some natural sounds. I hear a lot of cars and other things, and I’m always trying to figure out whether there is any danger around…At the very beginning of the war, there were probably more sounds of nature because a lot of people left big cities, left Kyiv, left all the urbanised territories, and so the sounds of nature were more recognisable. Now, I think that it’s an even harder time for nature because the sounds of war – the sounds produced by different military actions – are combined with the sounds made by people who are getting back to their cities, getting back to their homes and also trying to somehow normalise their lives. As a consequence, there is increased sound pressure and sound pollution.
