I am walking in the street. An alarm sounds. It has been my companion for more than two years. I go into the store. There is a surreal combination of wartime and peaceful everyday life.
I made this recording at around 12 noon. I was in the street and you can hear the air raid alarm. It’s so usual for us, unfortunately, to hear this sound now. It’s an alarm for people and an alarm for nature, because we have lost a big part of nature – natural places in Ukraine with forest, with woods, with steppes and so on. And this alarm creates some stress for me – not just because of me but because of my son, and because I have a lot of friends who are fighting in the war. They are defenders, they are soldiers, and it’s stressful for me because I also think about them. And I’m an ecologist, I’m a botanist, and I think a lot about plants and about the many animals who also died in this war…We have a lot of emotion every day, and I have a lot of emotion every day. I have some happy times with my son, but I didn’t record them because they are so noisy [laughs]. And I have a lot of stress and emotion about the war, about my friends, about my relatives and about nature. Really, it’s so hard.
It is interesting to me that the sounds of war can become "ordinary" everyday sounds that people just get used to.
