Some regular morning sounds in Lviv; people going to work, the sounds of cars, buses.
Many people live in areas not directly affected by the fighting. Yes, we are bombed, et cetera, but on most of the territory of Ukraine there are no tanks, no artillery, no trenches, no soldiers. So one of the biggest surprises for me personally, and for most of my friends, is that the reality of a full-scale war is quite different from our pre-war conceptions. This recording is basically the sound of a peaceful city because this is a big surprise, you know. At the same time as you have very heavy fighting every day along a thousand-plus miles of front line – it’s a huge front line – you have cities that are quite peaceful. I live in Lviv in western Ukraine, but there are cities just 30 kilometres from the front line and if you go there, you will hear the same sounds that you hear here – public transportation, people cleaning the streets and so on. This was one of the biggest surprises for many people. People imagine war as something very grim, very dark and everybody is hiding in shelters all the time, but that’s not the reality. And I think that the sounds of the morning street that I recorded from my window are also the sounds of this war. They are the sounds of how people have adapted. The first weeks were very different, of course, but very quickly, very quickly, the whole country, the people, the businesses, everything has adapted. And so it has changed our perception of war. Because even with a big war, a huge war, the population and the country continue to live. Once again, you have cars on the street, coffee shops are open. Everything.
