About five generators can be heard in this recording. They are located along a small street near the lakes, close to the cafe where I sometimes go to work and to drink coffee. These generator sounds completely absorb all of the other sounds around (the screams of three children riding scooters nearby, the sounds of cars, the sounds of the city). I remember that sunny day when I just wanted to sit quietly on the terrace near the lakes and drink coffee, but the power outages had begun.
This recording is from the cafe where I usually buy coffee. Sometimes I work in there, or I pass by it when I’m just walking and admiring the lakes in the nearest park. It was actually a video recording because I have a habit of filming everything. It’s the best way for me to record something and to report something. And I made this recording during the summer [2024] when we had the most terrible power shortages due to russian shelling of Ukrainian energy systems. All small businesses and private homes started to receive electricity from petrol generators, and this was complete hell for me. There was so much noise from the generators that I couldn’t hear anything else. I couldn’t hear birds. I couldn’t hear cars. I couldn’t even hear children laughing in the playground near my home. And I will never forget the smell of petroleum gas, which was everywhere – the smell of petroleum gas and the huge noise from the generators. Because there was not just one generator. There were hundreds of generators. When I made the recording, we had already had these power shortages for some time, and so I understood that the generators were necessary. I accepted the necessity of these sounds. I adapted to them. But when I hear this recording now [the interview took place in October 2024] at a time when we do not have power shortages, I find the sound irritating. I feel irritated. And I feel scared because it means that something is not okay with our electricity and that we again need to switch into survival mode. And another fact is that when I look at the video itself, I can see some children. I remember the children playing somewhere in the background. I remember some of the sounds they were making, but in the recording they cannot be heard at all. They are lost in the sounds of the generators, and this is something that additionally irritates me.
Hello, my name is Victoriia Kralko and I am a sound designer and a student of FAMU in Prague. I found your page when searching for a bank of sounds from Ukraine. I am currently working on an Erasmus project called Bugs(z) together with students from ENS Louis-Lumière in Paris and Film School of the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki. We are making a short audio documentary about how war changed homes of people in Ukraine and I was hoping to find real soundscapes from different places in Ukraine, that we could use In our audio-doc. The main line will be recordings of Ukrainians but we would really like to add real soundscapes to them, so we can create even a more realistic experience. Therefore I would like to ask you, if you would be so kind and share these recordings with us? We will only use them in our audio-doc, and will definitely send you the project, when it is done. We will be very grateful for your help.
Thank you,
Best wishes,
Victoriia Kralko
