Rooks calling as they feed and gather before flying to their evening roost. This is a characteristic late autumn/winter sound.

I wanted to record some sounds that are characteristic not only of our location but also, I would think, of most Ukrainian cities. There is a moment when Rooks fly across the area where we live to roost, but I wasn’t able to catch that and so I recorded the next best thing – a pre-roost gathering in the park. When I first arrived in Ukraine many years ago, I was struck by the ubiquity of Crows and Rooks in the cities, and the mass flight of Rooks in the morning and evening is something that is not found in British cities. Rooks are pretty much rural birds in Britain, whereas in Ukraine, especially in winter, they roost – in tens of thousands – in cities…Despite the war, the park is full of birds. In early spring, it is full of Chaffinches singing and Fieldfares that make very loud ‘chack chack’ noises, and I can remember the fledged young on the ground in mid-May as usual. I would therefore argue that there is a very encouraging persistence of bird life – at least that’s my overall impression.
