Original description of this sound by the interviewee who recorded it

The recording was made during a field scientific expedition to Dzharylhach Island (Dzharylhach National Nature Park, Black Sea, Southern Ukraine). You can hear the sound of the sea. The recording was made at sunset at the end of a long, productive day of work in the field. Since February 2022, the area has been under russian occupation.

I chose to share this recording that I made in 2021, a few months before the start of the full-scale war. It was recorded on Dzharylhach Island, which is the biggest island in the Black Sea. It’s a protected area and it’s a really unique area in the southern part of Ukraine…The recording shows the time when it was possible to do some field research and when it was possible to have access to the sea. I was only recently able to go on an expedition to the Black Sea coast for the first time after a nearly three-year gap…What I want to show with this recording is that the accessibility of the sound of the sea changed dramatically. A lot of new territories have been occupied since 2022, including Dzharylhach Island where I worked. And thinking about the impact of the war and sound on the environment, something that comes to my mind is noise pollution in the sea and the impact on marine mammals. I think that the potential impact of the war on marine mammals in the Black Sea is probably one of the most prominent examples showing that sound can be hurtful. In 2022, at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, there were mass mortality events of marine cetaceans [Dolphins and Porpoises] in the Black Sea…Research is ongoing, but these mass mortality events coincided with the beginning of the war, and one possible explanation for them is the impact of underwater sonars, the movement of warships in the northern part of the Black Sea and underwater explosions.

I think that maybe musicians could use some of the recordings, including this one, in their work.
