This is what night often sounds like, sometimes spontaneously, in the capital of Ukraine – Kyiv. Just imagine, you are tired after a long working day. You are finally in bed trying to get some rest. And as soon as you have fallen asleep, you hear the sound of turrets [a turret, or mounted machine gun, is part of a military vehicle that can be moved to face any direction] trying to save your life and the lives of millions of residents of Kyiv from a Shahed drone that was sent by russians to kill you, your friends and your family. Ukrainian military forces do everything that they can to save our lives. After several seconds of the turrets working, you hear nothing. All that remains is silence. Probably the drone was shot down...or they missed it. Who knows, but it has to fall somewhere. This is its fate; but if it is shot down by our armed forces, at least it will not reach its target and the chances of someone getting hurt are significantly reduced.

Interviewee's reflections/comments on the recording

When I listen to this recording once again, I don’t have any special emotions. This has been happening almost every night for over three years now. It even becomes a little easier, because now it’s just a recorded harmless memory. It’s much easier to listen to the recording again when you know that you weren’t hit. Because when I hear it live, in this very moment there’s only one thought in my head: please, not me this time, not my home, my family, my son, my loved ones and friends. You immediately start to think about these things and it makes your head ‘boom’ with thoughts, with emotions, with adrenaline. For New Year, a few of us had planned to meet in the flat where a friend of mine lived. We wanted to drink some beer. We wanted to drink some wine. We wanted to have fun because it is needed for our mental health. And suddenly, as we were getting ready to meet up, my friend called and said that a professor from the university that most of us graduated from had been killed by a Shahed drone in his own home, together with his wife (also a professor). And of course, we cancelled our plans. So, you can imagine the sort of hurricane of thoughts that we all experience when we hear the sound of drones, explosions and so on.

Thank you for the audio. Really interesting insights about Ukraine and the people living in the war zone.
