In this recording, you can hear the sound of my son's heartbeat shortly before he was born. The sound of an air raid siren cuts into the recording halfway through. This is one of the sounds that accompanied the process of my son's birth into this world.
I made this recording literally a few hours before the birth of my son. When my wife, Anastasiia, was preparing to give birth, a special device for foetal cardiotocography was attached to her stomach. This was necessary to monitor the baby’s heartbeat. I was with my wife at this time, and together we listened to the heartbeat of our son, knowing that we would be meeting him for the very first time in just a few hours. But then, suddenly, we heard an air raid siren outside the window. I can’t imagine how Anastasiia must have been feeling. In addition to the stress of childbirth, there was also the fear of possible shelling. I quickly checked all the news channels on Telegram, which were announcing another Shahed drone attack on Kyiv. We were very nervous. And it was then that I decided to make the recording. It clearly captures our son’s heartbeat in his mother’s womb, which is the sound of new life. And in the background of the recording, you can hear a siren announcing death and devastation. But fortunately, the drones were shot down by our heroic defenders from the Armed Forces of Ukraine; and within a couple of hours, Anastasiia and I were looking at our son Oleksandr. He opened his eyes and looked at us – and in that moment we understood that he had defeated the russians by the very fact of his birth. And his birth has given me new hope because despite everything that they do to us, russians will never defeat us. I am grateful to my wife Anastasiia for our son. We will do everything in our power to ensure that he only reads about this war in books published in free and independent Ukraine. And maybe one day he will listen to this recording.
