In the recording, you can hear the sounds of the wild steppe awakening in early spring. There is the background sound of the wind, and at least four species of birds can be heard singing. It is breeding season now, and so all birds are actively vocalising. I can’t name all of them, but one sound – which rapidly repeats throughout the entire recording – is the mating and territorial call of the Common pheasant (Phasianus colchicus). Males use sound to mark their territory and breeding sites, and also to communicate with each other. When I made the recording, I saw at least 35 of these birds.

На цьому записі чутно звуки дикого степу, що пробуджується ранньою весною. Протягом усього запису чути фоновий звук вітру, і можна почути спів принаймні чотирьох видів птахів. Весна – сезон розмноження, тому всі птахи активно спывають. Я не можу назвати їх усіх, але один звук – який часто і коротко повторюється протягом усього запису – це шлюбний чи територіальний крик звичайного фазана (Phasianus colchicus). Самці за допомогою цього звуку позначають свою територію та місця розмноження, а також спілкуються один з одним. В той ранок, коли я зробив запис, я бачив щонайменше 35 цих птахів.

This recording is ultimately about the resilience of nature – and how in many respects it doesn’t care about what is happening around it (war, agricultural activity, etc.). The Yelanets Steppe Nature Reserve was created specifically to protect nature – and nature continues to thrive here. Unfortunately, I was not able to capture the sounds of rockets and Shahed drones that fly over this territory almost every night, bringing death and destruction. Ukraine’s steppes are now littered with fragments of rockets and drones that have been shot down. In some areas, you can see burnt grass and trees; and sometimes missiles and rockets cause serious fires. But nature in this reserve, thank God, continues to exist in relative peace, surviving and living its own life.

Цей запис розповідає про стійкість природи і про те, як їй в багатьох аспектах байдуже до того, що відбувається навколо (війна, сільськогосподарська діяльність тощо). Заповідник «Єланецький степ» був створений спеціально для охорони природи і природа тут продовжує процвітати. На жаль, мені не вдалося вловити на записі звуки ракет і безпілотників «Шахед», які майже щоночі літають над цією територією, несучи смерть і руйнування. Українські степи зараз усіяні уламками таких збитих ракет і дронів. На окремих ділянках можна побачити згорілу траву та дерева; іноді палаючі уламки спричиняють серйозні пожежі. Але природа в цьому заповіднику, слава Богу, продовжує існувати у відносному спокої, живучи своїм буденним життям.
