I recorded these sounds on the day that russia hit the city of Sumy in northern Ukraine with two ballistic missiles. I had been speaking to a friend when she told me: ‘russians are hitting Sumy with missiles now. I need to call my relatives’. Shortly afterwards, I stopped in the centre of our town to make this recording of an air raid siren. As soon as I reached home, I read about events in Sumy. I wonder if the birds continued to sing during the missile attacks or if they became silent.

Я записала ці звуки в день російського ракетного обстрілу міста Суми на півночі України. Я розмовляла з подругою, коли вона сказала мені: «росіяни зараз обстрілюють Суми ракетами. Мені потрібно зателефонувати родичам». Невдовзі після цього я зупинилася в центрі нашого міста, щоб записати цей звук сирени повітряної тривоги. Щойно я дісталася додому, я прочитала про події в Сумах. Цікаво, чи продовжували співати птахи під час ракетних обстрілів, чи вони на той час замовкли.
